Source: Shero balks at Bruins' deal

Sportsnet.ca -- Talks between the Boston Bruins and Ray Shero, the man expected to be named the new general manager, have abruptly broken off, sources have told Sportsnet.ca.

It was believed the Bruins made an offer on the weekend, which Shero took home and has now rejected.

Shero was the party responsible for breaking off talks on Wednesday, a move sources have told Sportsnet was not based only on monetary disagreements, but also on autonomy. The issue of autonomy likely revolves around the day-to-day meddlings of notorious Bruins' owner Jeremy Jacobs and club president Harry Sinden.

While the deal is not officially dead, the Bruins are now contemplating other candidates.

As for Shero, the end of talks in Boston means he is once again a viable option for the vacant GM position in Pittsburgh. Shero's career included time as an assistant with both Ottawa and Nashville.

Former New York Rangers GM Neil Smith is also considered to be a strong candidate for the Pens' job.
